"Citizen Science 2.0: Engaging Society in Improving Air Quality"

In July 2021, the Clean Air Action Group has started a partnership project in cooperation with the Russian Foundation ERA. In both countries, there are a growing number of people who already monitor air quality themselves with such measurements, and this project will provide the opportunity to substantially increase their number.
During the project a series of workshops and trainings will be held in Hungary and Russia where activists will learn:

  • What is particulate matter, where do they come from and why are they dangerous to human health?
  • What is the citizens’ air quality monitoring network and why is it useful?
  • What air quality measurement methods are available?
  • How to assemble an air quality sensor?
  • What to do with the collected data?
  • How to file a complaint to the government?

During the project, measurements will be made with two instruments:
1. Sensor measuring particulate concentration (PM 2.5, PM 10) to be used continuously by citizens and activists.
2. A particle number counter– used only by CAAG’s experts

After the training, activists will have the unique opportunity to measure air quality in public places in Moscow and Budapest together with experts of CAAG and ERA and observe how the data is analyzed.
